SOstorms Scale SO3C
Sun 1st May 2005 Static Night

Time 00:24
A humid afternoon and evening has triggered a thunderstorm to the South East of the town.

Time 00:56
There is evident CC lighting striking quite in-frequently at the moment. And since the first strike, I haven't heard any thunder. This activity is on estimate 12km from my location, (home).

Time 01:10
This storm appears to have dissipated for now. Perhaps we'll see more later on? :)

Time 01:27
The TS has become more active again!

Time 01:35
The three thunderstorms as marked on the image above are moving Easterly across the country. From my (static) position I am able to see, roughly, the three storms. One to the SW, one to the W and one to the NW. The storm to the W appears most active, currently. There is the occasional rumble of thunder, (very deep, very nice!) although I am certain each storm consists purely of cloud to cloud (CC) lightning.

Time 01:41
It is hard to work out the distances with very few coherent rumbles of thunder and no real cloud to ground (CG) lightning. Very few of the strikes are knocking the needle on my CB radio which is a sign of weak CC lightning or a very distant thunderstorm.

Time 01:52
Every so often you see interesting phenomena within a storm! All three storms are within my view, and all are active. There is almost a synchronisation between the storms. The TS to the (now) South will strike 3 times, then after several seconds, the TS to the West will strike 3 times and after several seconds more the TS to the (now) North will strike 3 times. This occurence lasted only a couple of minutes this time.

Time 02:01
No noticeable increase or decrease in each storms activity, but by this point I was getting tired! For almost an hour the storms lingered, but after that point I was asleep! ;)

This small thunderstorm appears to be the only one currently active across Europe.

SO1 Tue 19th Apr
Fluffy cumulus got my attention this morning, soon turning into towering cumulus by early Afternoon. The Weather report had mentioned possible thundery showers in the South. At 3.30pm I walked into town and it was very dark to the South East, moving Westerly. As I arrived home at 4pm there was ONE rumble of thunder - the first I've heard this year! The clouds continued on an East/South Easterly path however the "storm" must have dissapated. Nothing further to report.
